System: None; chalcedony is a microcrystalline variety of quartz. Appearance: Apple-green. Dull waxy to vitreous luster depending on granularity and the variety; streak white Physical Properties: Hardness: (7); Specific gravity: (2.6 - 2.64). Cleavage: None. Smooth conchoidal fracture; transparent when colorless, otherwise translucent to opaque as colors get darker; fracture, brittle to tough; sometimes weakly fluorescent. Similar species: Very few minerals are confused with chalcedony. Occurrence: Chalcedony is formed in several environments, generally near the surface of the earth where temperatures and pressures are relatively low. It commonly forms in the zone of alteration of lode and massive hydrothermal replacement deposits and as bodies of chert in chemical sedimentary rocks. Found in serpentinite veins in Queensland (Australian jade), the Urals (USSR), California (USA) and Brazil. Miscellaneous: Chrysoprase is translucent, greenish-yellow or apple-green because of traces of nickel. Most chalcedonies develop as a microcrystalline precipitate from aqueous solutions or as dehydration products of opal, in low-temperature environments. Chrysoprase is cut into cabochons or cameos, and the finest specimens are often set in platinum with diamonds. Conventional Wisdom: The ancients believed that, like emerald, chrysoprase would lose its green color in the presence of poison. Romanian fold tradition said that the owner of a chrysoprase would be able to understand the language of lizards. Medieval doctors prescribed it for relief of gout. In the Middle ages, it was believed that a piece of chrysoprase held in the mouth would make one invisible, so it was viewed as a stone that helped criminals escape punishment. It instills a state of grace within the user, facilitating deep meditative states, compassion and clemency. It provides for non-judgemental attitudes, acceptance of others and acceptance of self.
